Job Description

The State of Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS) is looking for a dedicated and skilledMaintenance Worker 2to join our team. This role offers a dynamic and rewarding work environment where your efforts will directly contribute to the upkeep and enhancement of our state facilities. Key Responsibilities:

  • Landscape Maintenance:Operate a variety of mowers, weed whips, edgers, and pruners to keep the landscaping in top shape. You'll also be involved in the installation and removal of concrete and landscaping materials, using equipment such as jack hammers, skid loaders, and cement mixers.

  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance:Handle a range of machinery including flatbed trucks, tractors, end loaders, forklifts, and other vehicles to move materials and supplies. Perform minor repairs and service on equipment like air compressors.

  • Hand and Power Tools:Use small hand and power tools, such as chain saws, electric drills, and welding tools, to perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks and keep the workplace organized.

  • Event Setup:Assist in the setup and cleanup of events, including moving office furniture and equipment, installing and removing signage, and ensuring everything is in place for successful events.

  • Grounds and Facility Maintenance:Respond to emergency weather conditions by operating snowplows, small bulldozers, sanders, and tractors. Maintain flower and garden beds through pruning, trimming, weeding, spraying, and mulching.

  • Cleaning and Sanitation:Clean various facilities and grounds to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment. Tasks include dusting, polishing, and replenishing supplies, as well as waste removal and minor repairs.

  • Work Order Management:Input, receive, close, and manage work requests through verbal communication, phone, email, or our Work Order System. Ensure all requests are completed promptly, with a goal of resolving them within 24 hours.

Job Requirements & Expectations:

  • Must be flexible to complete requests at other buildings on the complex as needed.

  • Required to work nights and weekends during snow events or other emergencies.

  • Participate in professional training as directed to enhance your skills.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License and/or commercial applicator's 30T certification.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Two years of full-time work experience in semi-skilled grounds keeping, maintenance, or equipment operation.

  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Maintenance Worker 1.

Additional Qualification Requirements

  • Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.

  • In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
