Position Summary

The purpose and mission of Animal Care Services is advocating animal welfare, adoption, and rescue. The agency does this by protecting and promoting the health, safety, and welfare of pets and livestock in Marion County. The agency is able to do this by cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the constituents of Indianapolis and Marion County.

This position is responsible for overseeing and executing all aspects of the adoption program. Incumbent will collaborate closely with volunteers and other departments within the agency. Ensures adopters have a positive experience. Oversees programs such as Freedom-for-a-Day and Cuddle-Before-You-Commit. Coordinates the spay and neuter appointments of adoptive animals and off-site adoptions and special events. The incumbent in this position supervises adoption counselors staff. Incumbent will utilize independent judgment. The incumbents other actions are dictated by established policies and procedures, civil and criminal laws, and the codes established by the city and county. Incumbent must possess a valid driver’s license. Position reports to the Manager Kennel.

Position Responsibilities

  • Supervises adoption counselors and hires, develops, trains, and coaches team members in accordance with city policies and union agreement

  • Creates schedules for adoption counselors to ensure coverage

  • Works with kennel shift leaders and kennel management to keep adoption floor full and identify dog and cats in distress

  • Oversees the daily cashbox reporting

  • Supervises the off-site adoptions including but not limited to PetSmart and Mega Adoption events

  • Facilitates Freedom-for-a-Day program and the Cuddle-Before-You-Commit programs

  • Assists the public with lost animal tours and adoptions

  • Supervises tours of animal holding areas for adopters and lost pet owners to review animal population and aid in selection or identification of a pet

  • Ensures adopters have a positive experience when adopting and manages customer service escalations

  • Works closely with volunteers and collaboratively with all other divisions and agencies

  • Works with animal care technicians supportively and collaboratively in behavior assessments and health screenings on incoming animals to include the decision-making process of approval or denial for acceptance into the adoption program

  • Ensures all animals have been micro-chipped and altered prior to release to adopter

  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a related field required. Must be comfortable around animals of all breeds and sizes. Must be able to supervise, plan and coordinate the work of technical and clerical team members as well volunteers. The candidate must have an interest and commitment to the community and animals. Must be knowledgeable of local community organizations and resources. Must have great communications skills both orally and written and be able to adapt to different tones and messaging to meet the needs of different audiences in different settings. Must be able to work under extremely stressful conditions. Must exhibit tact in collaborating with other professionals and team members.Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Preferred Job Requirements and Qualifications

Associates’ Degree in Administration, Business Management, or a related field with two (2) years of work- related experience in a supervisory capacity. Prior experience working with animals a plus. Must be comfortable around animals of all breeds and sizes. Must be able to supervise, plan and coordinate the work of technical and clerical team members as well volunteers. The candidate must have an interest and commitment to the community and animals. Must be knowledgeable of local community organizations and resources. Must have great communications skills both orally and written and be able to adapt to different tones and messaging to meet the needs of different audiences in different settings. Must be able to work under extremely stressful conditions. Must exhibit tact in collaborating with other professionals and team members.Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Independent Judgment

Essential functions are regularly performed at a shelter with exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Physical Conditions

  • Sitting at a desk as well as standing and walking for long periods of time

  • Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of 50 pounds

  • Tasks may involve extended periods of time at keyboard or workstation

  • Tasks require the ability to perceive and hear sounds and see visual cues or signals

  • Tasks require the ability to communicate orally
