Description:

Accountability Objectives:

Provides and promotes a safe and secure environment. Protects life and property of all persons on hospital premises and patrols hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft and vandalism. Secures, unlocks and protects

hospital buildings. Responds to security and safety needs of hospital personnel.

II Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

A. Education

High school diploma or GED or equivalent required.

Associates degree in related field preferred.

B. Licensure / Certification

Valid State of Michigan drivers license.

Successfully complete department specific new hire training within the first six months of hire.

Current certification in Heart Saver

C Special Skill / Aptitudes

Ability to read and write in order to prepare reports, logs and conduct investigations.

Analytical skills necessary to interpret a variety of instructions and or data furnished in written, oral, diagram or scheduled form. Communication skills (written & oral skills) necessary in order to efficiently present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Ability to stand and walk approximately 70 percent of the work time, ability to protect self and others. Must be able to assist, lift and restrain individuals of all sizes & demeanor, which may require physical stamina.

Agility & speed are necessary to quickly respond to emergency situations. May be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands & arms; climb/balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste, smell

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.

II Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

D. Experience

Minimum of one year working experience in the field of law enforcement or military police or three (3) years of private security experience or education in a related field of study. Health care security experience preferred.

III Duties / Responsibilities:

Provides a visible deterrent to crime and prohibited activities by regularly touring hospital buildings and grounds.

Responds quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergent situations. Functions as a member of the First Response Team.

Provides visitor/employee screening services at various posts by utilization of electronic monitoring and physical surveillance methods. Ensures only authorized personnel are admitted to the hospital premises.

Directs and assists emergency responders and performs specialized tasks during and emergency situations.

Assists employees, patients and visitors with information, directions and physical support when necessary.

Escorts visitors, patients and staff to and from the parking areas or within the buildings. Assists motorists with vehicle problems.

Investigates incidents of an unusual nature as reported by hospital personnel, visitors, physicians or patients.

Reports the incident through written report form and completes all required documentation.

Provides for a safe environment by consistently patrolling buildings and grounds, inspecting doors, windows, walking surfaces, lighting, etc., and abating and reporting issues identified as hazardous to the appropriate department for corrective action.

Reports and assists in the management of any unusual conditions or malfunctions involving the buildings mechanical systems.

Immediately responds to emergency calls for assistance to control disorderly conduct or combative patients.

May assist the medical staff with patient restraints or notify the local police department for assistance if necessary.

Operates and understands the function of all equipment within the Security Control Center including the use of two way portable radios, closed circuit monitors and Fire and Security monitoring systems.

Maintains competency as demonstrated by successful completion of department specific training, sharing of knowledge and expertise with peers and others and adherence to unit requirements for continuing education.

Supports organizational, division and unit strategic goals, programs and activities and actively participates in departmental improvement projects.

Enforces all hospital policies and procedures as identified by Administrative and Department Policies.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

V Working Conditions:

Work is performed inside of campus buildings as well as outside where there is exposure to all types of weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.

Standing and walking account for approximately 70% of the time.

Occasional exposure to hostile or unruly patients, staff or visitors while performing security duties.

Physical ability necessary to assist, lift and restrain individuals of all sizes and demeanor.

This occupation requires tasks that involve exposure, or potential for exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material, i.e., radioactive material, medical waste, chemical hazardous waste, etc.
